Transportation at OSU

August 22, 2005

This web site is devoted to resources relevant to the study of transportation at OSU.

1 Transportation concentration in CRP

The transportation specialization centers on the movement of people around an urban area, and associated questions arising from that movement, such as choice of transportation modes, traffic congestion, air pollution, the costs of providing both transportation modes and the infrastructure that supports them. (It is also possible to study urban goods movement). If you intend to specialize in urban transportation within the MCRP program, the following courses are recommended:

  • CRP 775 — Introduction to Transportation — Autumn — 4 cr. This is a technical, quantitative course, taught jointly as Civil Engineering 775. It covers the basic “4-functions” of urban transportation planning: trip generation, trip distribution, modal choice and network modelling. No prerequisites, beyond not being fazed by algebra. Course web site
  • CRP 776 — Overview of Transportation — Winter — 4 cr. Overview of urban transportation finance, highway construction and maintenance, pollution and health aspects; mode choice etc. No prerequisites. Course web site

Then round out your study with one or more courses in Civil Engineering, depending on your interests:

  • CE 670 — Urban Public Transportation — Spring — 4 cr.
  • CE 672 — Traffic Engineering Studies — Autumn — 3 cr
  • CE 873 — Urban Transportation Demand Forecasting — Spring — 5 cr.
  • CE 874 — Urban Transport Network Analysis — Spring — 5 cr

2 The Joint Program in Urban Transportation

This program, run by CRP and Civil Engineering, is designed to permit students to obtain both an MCRP and an MS in Civil (Transportation) Engineering. For CRP students, you can do this in as little as one quarter of additional study, as long as you also take a course in each summer quarter. For CE students the marginal cost is higher, because the MCRP is a 90 credit degree, while the MS requires only 50 credits.

Additional discussion of the joint program, including a suggested plan of study for CRP students is available in HTML or PDF forms.

3 Transportation Engineering

Transportation engineering is studied as a specialization in the Department of Civil and Enivornmentatl Engineering and Geodetic Science.
